Hoe en wanneer is de Nederlandse standaardtaal ontstaan? Nicoline van der Sijs laat zien hoe taalgeleerden in de zestiende en zeventiende eeuw discussieerden over de vraag hoe de ideale standaardtaal eruit diende te zien en hoe ze de taalnormen en -regels voor het Standaardnederlands vaststelden. Uit verschillende varianten verhieven ze één bepaalde vorm tot standaardtaal. Soms introduceerden ze een nieuw, gekunsteld onderscheid, zoals tussen 'hen' en 'hun' of tussen 'waaronder' en 'onder wie'. In dit boek wordt duidelijk dat de vorming van een standaardtaal mensenwerk is. Daarbij nuanceert Nicoline van der Sijs bestaande aannames, zoals het belang van de Statenvertaling voor de ontwikkeling van de standaardtaal. Bijzondere aandacht krijgt de inbreng van de verschillende Nederlandse dialecten en het Duits in het Standaardnederlands. Ook recente ontwikkelingen komen aan bod, zoals verschillen tussen de standaardtaal in Nederland en Nederlandstalig België.
